French president’s positive test has set off a chain reaction of international officials entering For quarantine.

 

FRENCH PRESIDENT Emmanuel Macron has tested positive for the coronavirus, his office said Thursday.

Macron was diagnosed with COVID-19 on Thursday following a test that was performed at the onset of symptoms. His office said in a statement that the 42-year-old French president will isolate for seven days “in accordance with the health instructions in force applicable to all” and will continue to work remotely henceforth all the quarantine

The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he would “suspend all my activity and I will be in quarantine until Dec. 24.” The prime minister attended an event on Monday marking the 60th anniversary of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development with Macron, and Spain’s foreign ministry said he would take a COVID-19 test immediately

European Council President Charles Michel, who attended the same event as Sanchez and attended a meeting with Macron on Monday, will also go into self-isolation, a spokesman said However, Michel was informed by French authorities that he is not considered to be a close contact of Macron and most recently tested negative for the virus on Tuesday.

OECD’s President Angel Gurria, who also attended Monday’s commemorative event, said  he will self-isolate and get tested for coronavirus “given we [Macron] spent time together on Monday.”

French Prime Minister Jean Castex has gone into quarantine, CNN reported.

Macron’s recent schedule also included a Cabinet meeting and lunch with Portugal’s Prime Minister António Costa on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Macron held various meetings, including with Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, according to the CNN report..
